Emerald Builders

We’re hiring a carpenter. Anyone who finds this description appealing should apply

Here’s the deal. Our approach to building is hard. On most days we’re trying to achieve what the rest of the industry thinks is impossible: building top-quality homes with perfect details that are super airtight, well-insulated, adhere to the best in building science, and are truly high-performing homes. All of this while making sure our clients are excited and happy during the process, our subcontractors are well taken care of with a good environment to do their work, and the social and ecological communities we’re a part of are better than we found them.

It’s a tall order. We get that.

But it’s why we exist. We’re here to do the hard things to make our company part of the solution to the problems we face, and we refuse to back down from a challenge.

To work here those challenges need to excite you. You will be held to the highest standard of work. You will be expected to care about every single aspect of our projects: we care as much about air sealing tape as we do a crisp miter joint. No part of our work is less worthy than another.

We’re a residential general contractor. We manage jobs, we frame, we air seal, we do exterior finish and siding, we work with subcontractors, more than anything: we problem solve. We’re looking for a well rounded carpenter who loves high detail and building science equally who can focus on framing high performance envelopes, exterior trim packages, and siding with the ability to work well with our subcontractors.

We want this industry to be more just and welcoming. Women, People of color, trans and gender non-confrming people, queer people, and people of any or no sexual orientation are encouraged to apply.

Compensation will be based on ability and experience and includes paid vacation time and healthcare.

Experienced Carpenter:  $20-25.00 per hour

Lead Carpenter: $25-30.00 per hour

passivhausMAINE (we’re hiring!)

retrofitMAINE/BuildingsUP Program Director

About retrofitMAINE
retrofitMAINE is an open-source, collaborative project designed and managed by passivhausMAINE to monitor, document, and analyze deeper retrofits of common Maine building typologies using passive house principles for the benefit of Maine residents and its construction community. BuildingsUP is a federal program designed to scale retrofits. The rfME BuildingsUP proposal is focused on the development of local training centers and energy hubs for community education and outreach. More info below and on the retrofitMAINE website.

retrofitMAINE is thrilled to have been selected to work with the BuildingsUP team. It’s hard to overstate the amount of support being offered to the organizations who have won the BuildingsUP Prize. The DOE has committed to supporting small organisations make huge contributions to the scaling of low-income retrofits.

phME and rfME are fully aligned with the DOE goals. We are grateful for the opportunity to integrate more deeply with our home community of Freeport in the initial pilot of the BuildingsUP program and we look forward to many collaborations across communities, sectors, agencies and households as we dig deeply into this work.  We see this as  a manifestation of just transition in the era of climate change, both as mitigation and increasingly adaptation.

The director we are hiring will be welcomed into our team with capable and good spirited assistance in builder training, marketing, event planning, and sharing our strong local, regional and international connections. The BuildingsUP program provides up to 140 hrs of professional assistance and we have already found wonderful partnerships that will provide resources beyond those 140 hours.

An ideal applicant would have strong roots in community outreach as well as academic and professional partnerships in the building science world. Alternately, an applicant with a background in low income financial assistance, local, state and federal programs, combined with Building Science or Community outreach would also be a strong candidate. A clear vision of the complexity of retrofits on a technical and social level is imperative.

We are ready to add a new member to our team. Read ahead for details about this position.
